Zope QuickStart is Back

If you've ever used a very old version of Zope, you might recall the QuickStart.

Let's all welcome back a relic from the past, the original Zope QuickStart built entirely in really old DTML.  How do I know it's really old DTML?  Well, here is a short snippet of what DTML looked like before it obtained the <dtml-var myvar> tags:

<!--#var title-->

This was how DTML used to be expressed, and while it's not currently documented in any modern DTML documentation I can find, this format is still entirely supported with DTML in Zope 6, believe it or not!  In fact, I took the time this morning to actually hand port the entire original QuickStart from a running Zope 2.5.1 instance using an XML export, along with fixing the odd bugs.

A Screenshot from the original Zope QuickStart running on Zope 2.5.1 in Internet Explorer 5.

All of the actual DTML in HTML comments worked fine, the only issue I ran into was that the modern implementation of the <dtml-tree> tag no longer uses the <img> tag to display the + and - buttons required to expand the tree leaves.  In modern DTML, this has been replaced by CSS styles, and so to make <dtml-tree> tags work in modern Zope 6, just add the following to your <head> section:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/++resource++zmi/zmi_base.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/++resource++zmi/fontawesome-free-5.15.2/css/all.css" />

With those added, the tree leave icons then rendered as nice little arrows which you can see for yourself by clicking on the link at the top of this post.  If you'd like to import this into your own Zope 6 installation, use this QuickStart.zexp export I made.
